Community

At Stokesley Community Library, we’re about so much more than borrowing books.

We’re a genuine hub for community life — a place where local history is celebrated, advice is on hand, friendships are formed, and creativity flourishes. Whether you’re here to explore Stokesley’s past, catch a live performance, get practical support, or simply connect with others, there’s always something going on and a warm welcome waiting.

Take a look at what’s on offer — we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised!

Curious about Stokesley’s past? You’ve come to the right place! Our library is home to a fascinating collection of local history resources, lovingly compiled by the Stokesley Local History Group.

The Stokesley Local History Collection

Our extensive archive covers a wide range of topics relating to Stokesley’s rich history — from local landmarks and community life to people and events that have shaped the town over the centuries. The collection is available for reference in the library, and sections can be copied if you need them for your own research.

Local Reference & Lending Books

We also stock a carefully chosen selection of reference and lending books about Stokesley and the surrounding districts — perfect for dipping into whether you’re a dedicated local historian or simply curious about the area you call home.

Come and Explore

Whether you’re tracing your family roots, researching a local landmark, or just love discovering hidden stories from the past, our team will be happy to point you in the right direction. Just ask at the desk!

We’re proud to have hosted drop-in Citizens Advice sessions here at the library, giving local people easy access to free, confidential advice. Sadly, due to funding pressures, these regular sessions are currently on hold — but please do check with us, as we hope to welcome them back in the future!

How to Access Citizens Advice

Stokesley Community Library is a registered Remote Adviser Hub for North Yorkshire Citizens Advice.

Whilst we are no longer able to offer in person Citizens Advice Sessions, Remote Adviser sessions are available (via Teams) on the third Monday of each month.  Library staff will fully support the technical set-up of these meetings.

Please contact the library for more information, or to make an appointment.

Citizens Advice services can still be accessed in the following way:

  • CA Advice Line: 0808 278 7900 (9.30 – 4.30pm)
  • CA Advice Bus – first Friday of each month in Stokesley Market Square (10am – 12 noon)
  • Website: http://CANY.org.uk (click on Contact Us for telephone numbers or click on Visit for Branches)

Whatever you need help with, support is closer than you think!

Adult Learning

From time to time the library hosts Adult Learning classes, sometimes just one session and at other times a series of weekly sessions.  These are provided by North Yorkshire Libraries’ Adult Learning Services.

Please monitor our Facebook page and website or come into the library to ask if any sessions are planned.

Lights, camera, action! Stokesley Community Library is your local home for big-screen entertainment, with regular film showings using our state-of-the-art 4K disc player, projector, and screen.

Monthly Film Night — Everyone Welcome

On the second Saturday of every month, we throw open the doors for our popular Film Night. Tickets are available to purchase from the library in advance, and all are welcome for a small fee.

We carefully choose films that offer something a little more meaningful — think compelling stories, memorable characters, and real emotional connection. For us, a great script and strong performances will always win out over flashy special effects. A bit of humour never goes amiss either!

We aim to show films as soon as they become available, so there’s always something to look forward to.

Classic Film Group — for u3a Members

Are you a member of Stokesley & District u3a? Why not join our friendly Classic Film Group, which meets once a month to watch and discuss a classic film together?

We loosely define “classic” as anything over 20 years old — though we’ll happily bend the rules if the film deserves it! It’s a relaxed, sociable evening for anyone who loves film and enjoys a good discussion.

Come and Join Us!

Whether you’re a casual filmgoer or a dedicated cinephile, there’s a seat with your name on it at Stokesley Community Library. Check our website, Facebook page, or the noticeboard in the library for upcoming screenings and details.
